The amount of bodily harm that can occur in a collision with a large truck can be hard to comprehend. Below, we’ve noted some of the most common types of injuries people sustain during large truck crashes. This will provide some sense of how these collisions can alter the course of someone’s life.

Head Trauma

During a collision with a large truck, trauma to the head is common. The force of a collision can lead to severe facial injuries as well as injuries to the cranium and jaw. Even with airbags, the injuries to the face and head may be catastrophic.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries refer to injuries to the brain caused by blunt force. Concussion are among the most well known traumatic brain injuries, through contusions are also an issue. If a person suffers a penetrating head injury during a truck accident, the dangers of the brain injury are much higher.

Broken Bones

Broken bones are very common after collisions with large trucks. Legs may be broken given the force cause by striking the console. Broken arms are also likely, particularly for drivers. The impact can also lead to broken ribs due to the seat belts or simply just the force involved in the collision.

Lacerations

Broken glass from the windshield and windows increases the risk of serious lacerations during an auto accident. Yet lacerations may also be caused by plastic and metal that breaks off during a collision. Immediate medical attention is needed to prevent excessive loss of blood.

Loss of Limbs

An arm or a leg may wind up crushed or mangled in a large truck accident. The limb may be beyond repair, requiring amputation during medical treatment. In some gruesome cases, a hand, a foot, or an entire limb may be severed during the collision.

Damage to Internal Organs

The trauma to the body during a major auto collision cannot be understated. While there are many outward signs of injury, people in large truck accidents are also likely to suffer damage to their internal organs. A collapsed or punctured lung, a ruptured spleen, and other kinds of injuries must be addressed as soon as possible.

Nerve Injuries

Nerves can be stretched, crushed, or severed during an auto collision. When nerves are damaged, a person may lose sensation and control of part of their body. While some nerve injuries heal on their own, other may require surgery to restore just a fraction of normal function.

Neck and Back Injuries

Whiplash, damaged vertebrae, and herniated discs are just a few of the potential neck or back injuries that may be sustained during a large truck accident. These injuries to the neck and back can take months to recover from, and some have long-term effects on mobility, balance, and general wellness.

Paralysis

Partial or total paralysis can occur in large truck accidents if a person suffers severe damage to the their spinal cord. Paraplegia can be caused by irreparable damage to the lower spinal cord, resulting in the loss of use of the lower half of the body. Quadriplegia is caused by irreparable damage to the upper spinal cord or neck area, resulting in the total loss of use of all limbs.
