With every passing year, it seems road rage is becoming more of an issue. So much so that it is now one of the top causes of car accidents and injuries. When drivers are angry, it can cloud their judgment and cause them to participate in reckless behavior. When this uncontrolled anger goes unchecked behind the wheel, it can be fatal.

Auto accidents and road rage make a dangerous combination and should be avoided at all costs. Although it may be tempting to retaliate if you feel you have been wronged on the road, this can only escalate the issue and put you and the other driver in danger. If you have been the victim of an auto accident and road rage that resulted in personal injury, our lawyers at Quick Law Group, PLLC in Kirkland, WA can help you obtain the compensation you are entitled. Below are some helpful tips on how to avoid road rage.

Drive Safely

Practicing safe driving will not always prevent a car accident, but it can certainly lower your risk. When driving, be sure to use your turn signals, keep a safe from other cars, drive the speed limit, and avoid making quick lane changes that may offend another driver. If you have a tendency to drive slowly, stay in the right lane and keep the left lane open for faster drivers. One of the best rules to follow is to treat someone how you would want to be treated. Drivers who are courteous to other drivers are less likely to experience or engage in road rage.

Stay Calm

It can be hard to stay calm, especially when driving in traffic to and from work. Do not let another individual anger you or frustrate you on the road. To help you stay calm, find ways to make your driving experience more peaceful. This may include listening to calming music or your favorite podcast to help keep you in the right frame of mind.

Diffuse the Situation

If another driver cuts you off or offends you on the road, avoid retaliating or using obscene hand gestures; this will only escalate the situation. In the same way, if you make a mistake on the road, try and apologize to the other driver. If you find yourself in danger on the road due to someone else’s road rage, slow down or quickly exit to try and remove yourself from the situation.

Call 911

If at any point you feel unsafe and are unable to diffuse the situation, call 911 or find the closest police station. Do not get out of the car until you are safe. Because anger can make an individual irrational, it’s best to not engage the other driver.
