Personal injury attorneys at Quick Law Group understand how deeply injuries can impact their clients’ lives. Few injuries are as damaging as brain injuries. A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including the way they feel, think, and function.

When a traumatic brain injury is caused by another’s reckless or negligent actions, as is often the case with a fall, a traumatic brain injury lawyer can help victims seek financial compensation for the damages of their injury. Our Bellevue, WA, legal team has helped countless victims of brain injuries caused by a fall to maximize the compensation they receive for both economic and non-economic losses.

What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury causes damage to the tissues of the brain. Traumatic brain injuries are caused by external forces. A TBI can occur when the head is struck or penetrated, or when the head is jolted with enough force to shake the brain so that it slams against the skull.

TBIs range in severity, depending on how much damage is caused to the brain’s tissues. A mild TBI causes short-lived symptoms, such as a brief change in a person’s mental status or functions. More severe TBIs can permanently alter a person’s cognitive, physical, and emotional functions.

Falls Are a Leading Cause of TBIs

People don’t generally think of falls as causing serious injuries, but they are actually a leading cause of TBIs. When a person falls, especially if they fall from a significant height, their head is likely to slam into the ground. This type of force can easily cause a mild to severe traumatic brain injury.

According to data reported by the CDC, falls are a leading cause of TBIs. In 2014, falls were the number one cause of all TBI-related emergency room visits. That year, falls accounted for just under half (48 percent) of visits to the ER for traumatic brain injuries.

Anyone can suffer from a TBI caused by a fall, but the CDC further reports that the most vulnerable fall victims are children and seniors. In 2014, 49 percent of TBI-related emergency room visits among children aged 0-17 were caused by falls. The same year, 81 percent of TBI-related emergency room visits among adults aged 65 years and older were caused by falls.

Damages from TBI Injuries

Because TBIs can impact a person’s cognitive, physical, and emotional functions, clients at our Bellevue firm are likely to suffer a wide range of damages. If another person or party is responsible for a fall that causes a TBI, they should be held accountable for all economic and non-economic losses related to the injury, including:
